Infant School

Early Years

Vision and Aims

The purpose of Reception at Godolphin Infant school is to provide an environment and curriculum which allows all pupils to grow into happy, confident children who are ready to start the next stage of their learning in Key Stage One.

By the end of Reception, our aim is that all pupils will:

  • Read and write short sentences
  • Work confidently with numbers up to 20
  • Independently dress and undress
  • Form friendships and work as part of a team
  • Manage their feelings and behaviour
  • Know how to stay safe and healthy both in and out of school.

Class Structure

In Reception, we have four classes:

  • RE
  • RR
  • RM
  • RS

Each class has a class teacher and at least one teaching assistant.  Most classes have 2 adults in addition to the class teacher.

Curriculum

The child is always at the heart of how we plan and teach in Reception.  Whilst the curriculum incorporates a mix of adult-led and child-initiated activity, the children spend a large part of their day engaging in play.  Play is essential for children’s development, building their confidence as they learn to explore, to think about problems, and relate to others.

Please click on the link below for details of what the children will be learning, via our thematic approach:

Reading and Writing

We follow Read Write Inc for phonics, reading and some writing.  The children also receive a short Literacy carpet session every day where we consolidate phonics, read stories and model basic conventions of writing.

Maths

The children receive a short maths carpet session every day before engaging in carefully planned activities planned to motivate and develop their skills.

Reception plan topics for each half term based around the children's interests.  These are therefore fluid and can change as each half term progresses.

Please see examples of topic themes that the children can enjoy throughout the year:

Term Topic Name
Autumn 1 All About Me
Autumn 2 Superheroes
Spring 1 Celebrations
Spring 2 New Beginnings
Summer 1 Transport
Summer 2 By the Seaside

Home Learning

We know that a child’s parents are their first and most important teachers, and we want to work in partnership with you to ensure your child is successful.

Each week children are issued with reading books to take home.  We expect every child to read for 5/10 minutes each day alongside an adult and for a comment/signature to be recorded daily in their yellow reading records.
